The Friends of the Upper Shores Library
Po Box 104
Lavallette, NJ 08735
The Friends of the Upper Shores Library organized in the summer of 1995 prior to the opening of the Upper Shores/Lavallette Branch Library. Officers were installed in October 1995. When the library opened in December 1995, the Friends organization had a membership of 200. In March 1997, the group received designation as a publicly supported organization by the Internal Revenue Service.
The Friends of the Library are citizens who choose to
help their local library. In this role, they perform several important
functions: Friends serve as a "connecting link" between the library
and the community, interpreting one to the other.
Friends help supplement the library budget by providing funds for special programs, equipment, or materials. Friends are a source of volunteers whose services extend the role of the library staff to patrons.
The vast majority of this work is paid for through your dues, which is tax deductible.
During their four-year history, the Friends have made several contributions toward enhancing library services;
- Publication of a quarterly newsletter to inform Friends of library
services and activities.
- Sponsorship of library programs including: the 1996 Birthday
Brunch, 1999 National Library Week celebrations, several vocal concerts,
a magic show, boating safety, book discussions, National Humanities
Month and holiday open houses.
- Fundraising events including- an annual membership drive, selling
sun visors and book/bake sales.
- Donation to the library of 35mm camera, Polaroid camera, scrap book supplies, cassette/CD player, mini vacuum cleaner and several books and subscriptions.
