The Upper Shores branch remains closed.

Repairs to the Upper Shores Branch of the Ocean County Library on Jersey City Avenue, here, are underway in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. "Following an inspection, it has been determined the building is structurally sound," said Susan Quinn, Ocean County Library Director. "However, interior repairs are needed including replacing wallboard, and carpeting following the removal of the building contents since the storm resulted in water damage in the building." Exterior repairs will include replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning and electrical systems and clean-up of the landscaping, she said. Over 23,000 books were removed from the building while work crews from the Ocean County Department of Buildings and Grounds completed the removal of wallboard and carpeting. Ocean County Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Library system and the Department of Buildings and Grounds, said county agencies have been working around the clock to get all county facilities affected by Superstorm Sandy up and running. "Our citizens rely on our programs and services," Vicari said. "Our libraries serve as focal points in our communities where citizens can get information, can get help with employment or can just take some time to relax. Getting this facility up and running again is important to the residents of the northern barrier island." The branch received new carpeting and paint in October 2011 as part of the regular facilities maintenance plan. The project is now expected to go to bid shortly and it is anticipated repairs to the branch will be completed some time this summer. The branch will be closed during repairs. "The Ocean County Library Commission, the library director and all employees are working diligently to restore the level of service that our Ocean County residents, tax payers and visitors have come to expect from our library system," said Bonnie R. Peterson, chairperson of the Ocean County Library Commission. Quinn noted that while the circumstances are different the process is similar to the one the library used for the successful renovation of the Brick Township Branch. "While we are busy undertaking these repairs to get the Upper Shores branch open in a timely manner, we invite our patrons to visit our nearby full-service library branches during this time," she said. Nearby branches include the Toms River Branch located at 101 Washington St., Toms River, the Island Heights Branch at 122 Central Ave., Island Heights. Patrons may also access the library's website 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.theoceancountylibrary.org. June Schneider, Upper Shores branch manager said, "There are positive signs of progress being made and I know that we are all doing our best to help bring about the earliest recovery possible. We value the strong connections we have in the community and look forward to serving our patrons again."
